Got an AI strategy yet?

May 2, 2018

I am sure you must have heard all about the AI news, the hype and buzz in passing, or either practically when you're getting your head around it! This imminent agent of change (Artificial Intelligence) is knocking at your door, its the next opportunity and you may feel clueless and unprepared. Technology changes, Data and intelligence innovation along with the emergence of AI is almost a "BlitzKrieg" in the world of digital transformation!

Knock, knock! ... Who’s there?

AI... AI who?

Ey, I got some intelligence for you...

There may be 20 odd questions running through your head as a decision maker; should we welcome this technology in? Is it the Messiah or a monster in disguise? We have no clue about its size, scale and nature of this beast, so will it even fit through the door or get along with the people and process within the organisation? Does it really know more than what we know from our own data?... and the list goes on.

The truth is, AI has already impacted and has gained the interest of superpowers, corporations and global leaders. AI has emerged as one of the most powerful forces in the digital transformation. For any business to welcome this cutting edge transformation, you have to first build an AI strategy to overcome the challenges! As CTO, CIO or Head of Information, steps have to be taken to ensure this agent of change feels welcomed, at home and is accepted within the business.

Step1: Discover

Understand the new trending capability and turn the disruption into opportunity. Skinning the cat or taming the beast strategically, architecturally and technically! Identify the areas of unknown gaps between now and the ultimate to-be-AI-state.

Step2: Encourage Democratisation

Remember technology is only the enabler and technology is the easy part. The real challenge is, the culture and making new technology and ways of working widely acceptable. If you win to convince the culture, you are going to disrupt the disruption! Create an open collaborative platform to learn and to share ideas and expertise. Make AI capability accessible to all impacted by it. There should be new processes, services, tools and infrastructure which should dwell alongside or even supercede existing ones.

Ultimately, the aim should be to build a strong AI Community all the way from C-level.

Step3: Encourage value-added data

Get more data but get more "quality" or "value-added" data! Encourage systems to generate more meaningful data. Enrich your data to give more information i.e. more embedded intelligence which will ultimately add value. Therefore, having a quality, resilient and a big data source is the core of any AI application.

Step4: Practice Interoperability

Once you have improved the credibility of your own data, a set of new talent, skills, and knowledge will be required to elevate the AI maturity business-wide. Integrity and transparency will be key in binding the various micro-changes together within the business aligning them with the AI vision.

Step5: Investment

This goes hand in hand with all of the above and is ensuring, business change is operating as expected to Return on Investment. This means the expectations and maturity of various services, systems, and processes will be initially challenged, therefore a lot of investment in upskilling and adopting new technology will be required in a strategic manner.

These are my thoughts and opinions from my experience. Hope these pointers help businesses to develop a next-generation digital transformation strategy. More than happy to hear your thoughts. Feel free to comment, share and feedback on the article.

Thanks for your time.
